Before beginning a discussion on election, we want our intentions to be clear: since this doctrine has created so much controversy and has been frequently misunderstood, we do not want our understanding of it to be a means of division, but rather a means of unifying believers as we grapple with God’s sovereign purposes and plan. Since we are called to unashamedly preach the Word of God, we want to speak frankly about a doctrine that should elicit both humility and worship among believers. May those who differ with us not judge our intentions or our passion for reaching the …
My most important book, The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent—an informed response to Islam’s war with Christianity, was released by Harvest Publishers early in this new year.
I began writing this book several years ago after Rebecca and I toured Turkey, visiting the cities where the seven churches of Revelation were located. Of course, those churches disappeared in the early centuries, but Turkey (biblical Asia Minor) maintained a distinct Christian presence until Islam came and conquered the city of Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453. Churches were destroyed or transformed into mosques; …
Throughout history, the mode of burial has been culturally dictated. No method is biblically mandated, however, in early Jewish culture, bodies of the dead were often allowed to decompose until only their bones remained. The bones would then be placed in the family “bone box.” When the Scriptures speak of men going to “rest with their fathers,” their bones literally did!
By the time of Jesus, the culture had adopted the use of individual bone boxes known as ossuaries. When Jesus was laid in the tomb, it likely was to precede His eventual placement in an ossuary. Praise God that …
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”—Hebrews 4:12-13
The words of great men are treasures. We read books to find out what they said. We look into the papers and magazines to learn the …
Never formally ordained, to many he’s the unofficial archbishop of American fundamentalism. With no classroom education beyond grammar school, he’s considered one of the leading biblical scholars of this generation—holds a doctor of literature degree from the largest liberal arts college in Illinois—and is the author of more than 40 wide-selling books and commentaries.
With no previous pastoral experience, he stepped into the largest fundamental pulpit in the U.S., and for 14 years he has filled the vast auditorium as no other man can, with only two Sundays in that period passing without at least …
Sermon delivered at The Moody Tabernacle in 1922 by Harry W. vomBruch Stenographically reported. Not revised by the speaker.
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
I reject the fear of the future, for I believe that the future is in your hands.
I reject the fear of evildoers, for your Word says, “Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident…For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.”
I renounce the fear of rejection, for David wrote in your holy Word, “For my father and mother have forsaken me, but …
Salvation is the greatest fact in the universe of which we know:
1. Because it is salvation from the greatest evils. 2. Because it is salvation to the greatest good. 3. Because it is salvation through the greatest agencies. 4. Because it is salvation with the greatest people. 5. Because it is salvation for the greatest purpose.
I. The Greatest Evils.
They are three and each of them begins with the serpent letter “S”: Sin, sickness and suffering. Salvation from sin, from the results of sin, to be sure, but better still, salvation from sin …
Three verses of the 14th chapter of Genesis give all we know of the biography of Melchizedek who is declared by the writer to be greater than Abraham. This to the Jew meant that he was the greatest man that ever lived.
Some have contended with Jerome that Melchizedek was the Patriarch Shem famous and powerful in his old age. Others believe that he was an angel from heaven and others that he was the Holy Spirit. Some affirm that he was God incarnate, because they think that things are said of him which can apply only to God. A …
“Thou sawest till that a stone was cut without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them in pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them, and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole world.”—Daniel 2:34-35.
The Image is the symbol of the world-power in its whole future development …
