The Great Atonement

By Rev. P.W. Philpott, D.D.

“And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.” —Leviticus 16:21–22

The Problem Of The Times And How To Meet It

By Rev. James M. Gray, D.D.

An address delivered at the Elim Swedish Free Church, Chicago, on Sunday afternoon May 17, 1925.

As I keep in mind that I am speaking to young people, I am impressed by the fact that young people of this day and generation have a more difficult time of it as witnesses for Jesus Christ than the young people of any other generation that I have ever known.

Impressive Facts

Some of you may have read last week the report of the great meeting of chiefs-of-police which was held in the city of New York; and if so, you must have …

If I Were A Boy Again

By Rev. P.W. Philpott, D.D.

Synopsis of an address delivered by Pastor P.W. Philpott at the graduation exercises of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois.

I shall endeavor to give you a practical heart talk. Several days ago, when thinking of this address, there came to my mind some lines written by Howard Arnold Walter, I believe, at the time of his graduation from college:

I would be true, for there are those that trust me;
I would be pure, for there are those who care;
I would be strong, for there is much to suffer;
I would be brave, for there is much to dare.

I …

A Bible Revival

By Rev. P.W. Philpott, D.D.

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah, the first post-captivity books, belong to each other. Zerubbabel led the first company of exiles back to the land of promise. Eighty years later he was followed by Ezra with a company of probably fifty thousand. Ezra’s mission was purely religious. He brought gifts to the temple and sought to restore the worship of the fathers and revive the spiritual life of the nation. He was faced with very discouraging conditions, for the Jews had intermarried with the heathen and corrupt and idolatrous practices had been introduced which created a great problem.

The book …

Are We Ignoring The Holy Ghost?

By Rev. P.W. Philpott, D.D.

In searching the Scriptures to ascertain what has been revealed concerning the Holy Spirit and His ministry, we discover a striking vocabulary of phrases and synonymous terms that are both interesting and instructive. We find that out of thirty-nine books in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is mentioned in twenty-four of them, at least 84 times. Another remarkable fact in the Old Testament study of this subject which I observed is that the Holy Spirit is not named at all in the books of either Joshua, Jeremiah, or Daniel, but the marks of His presence are there. He wrought …

The Acoustics Of The Moody Church

By Prof. F.R. Watson

The Moody Church News, May 1925, Volume 10, Number 5
By: Prof. F.R. Watson of the University of Illinois

The acoustics of churches is much of a mystery to most people. Sound is supposed to act in a curious way that no one can predict. If good acoustics are obtained in an auditorium, it is considered to be a matter of good luck. If a room is faulty, an immediate suggestion is made that wires or a sounding board be installed to correct the difficulty. These areas are almost entirely wrong, because sound proceeds in a very orderly fashion and …

A Description Of The New Church And Sunday School Buildings

By Gustave Orth

The Moody Church News, April 1925, Volume 10, Number 4

By: Gustave Orth (of the Staff of Fugard and Knapp)

The Moody Church is ideally situated, facing Lincoln Park on the one side and LaSalle Avenue on the other. Transportation is of the best. Clark Street carries the greatest volume of north-and-south street car traffic, North Avenue is convenient for the east-and-west, while LaSalle Avenue is on our boulevard system.

The ground entrance is from Clark Street, and is midway between the church and the Sunday School building. To the right, in the church buttress, is the cornerstone, inscribed in …
