And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
D.L. MOODY
Look at these words carefully. It does not say He will supply our wants. There are many things we want that God has not promised to give. It is our need, and all our need.
My children often want many things they do not get; but I supply all they need if it is in my power to do it. I do not supply all their wants by any means. And so, though God may withhold from us many things we desire, He will supply all our need. There can come upon us no trouble or trial in this life, but God has grace enough to carry us right through it, if we will only go to Him and get it. But we must ask for it day by day. “As thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deuteronomy 33:25).
ERWIN LUTZER
God will give us what we need when we need it, and often not before. The apostle Paul was given a thorn in the flesh to keep him humble; it could have been any kind of weakness, insult, hardship, persecution, or calamity (2 Corinthians 12:7–10). Paul specifically prayed three times “that it should leave” him.
God said no to what Paul wanted, but God gave him what he needed, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9). In effect, God said, “I’m not giving you what you want, but I am giving you what you need.” You will have grace to bear your burden.
As Moody said, there is often a vast difference between what we want and what we need. Grace is a wonderful pillow upon which many a weary traveler has laid his head. Sufficient grace comes with sufficient faith.
PRAYER
Father, may I rest in your sufficient grace with my wants and my needs.REFLECTION QUESTIONS
