But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
D.L. MOODY
I find many Christians worry about the future; they think they will not have grace enough to die by. It is much more important that we should have grace enough to live by. It seems to me that death is of very little importance in the meantime. When the dying hour comes, there will be dying grace; but you do not require dying grace to live by. If I am going to live for fifteen or twenty years, what do I want with dying grace? I am far more anxious about having grace enough for my present work.
I have sometimes been asked if I had grace enough to enable me to go to the stake and die as a martyr. No; what do I want with a martyr’s grace? I do not like suffering, but if God should call on me to die a martyr’s death, He would give me martyrs’ grace. If I have to pass through some great affliction, I know God will give me grace when the time comes; but I do not want it till it comes.
ERWIN LUTZER
Corrie Ten Boom, who survived Nazi concentration camps, was about six years old when she told her father she was afraid of death. He responded, “Corrie, when you and I go to Amsterdam—when do I give you your ticket?” She replied, “Why, just before we get on the train.” He was making the point that we don’t need dying grace until our time comes to die. As Moody said, we would even have martyr’s grace if we were led to the stake to be killed for our faith. We have sufficient grace for today; fresh grace will be given to us tomorrow.
