The Load-Bearing Savior

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

D.L. MOODY
Some years ago, a gentleman asked me which I thought was the most precious promise of all those that Christ left. I took some time to look over the promises, but I gave it up. I found that I could not answer the question. Like a man with a large family of children, he cannot tell which he likes best, he loves them all. But if not the best, this is one of the sweetest promises of all:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28–30).

Rest.
Most of us have little time for rest. Addicted to distractions, our anxieties, and our apprehensions, we are too preoccupied to seriously rest in the Lord. But there is rest for the people of God.
Imagine if, an hour into an international flight, I were to ask a flight attendant to check if the pilots were awake. If I expected the attendant to repeatedly reassure me that the pilots were awake, they would become exasperated: “You are insulting this airline!” And I would be.
Yet, we insult God every day; we give Him a burden then investigate whether He has done something about it. But, just as I should rest on the plane, so we should rest once a matter has been given to God. We do not collapse into laziness or presumption, but we rest while we work. The pressure, the worries, and the cares of this world no longer plague us.
Choose to transfer your burdens to Christ right now and come to Him, finding rest for your weary, overly distracted soul. He has strong shoulders; just deal with the sins He brings to your attention and trust Him to take you all the way home!

PRAYER
Father, may I cast my burdens on you and trust in you.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Why is Christ able to take our burdens and what does it mean that His yoke is easy?

Are there any burdens in your life that you are holding on to? If so, why have you not given them to Christ?
