Eating Money

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”—Luke 12:21 We have here the picture that Jesus draws of the rich fool. Now it is pretty hard to tell the world that there is such a thing as a rich fool, because nearly everybody thinks when a man gets money he is about the wisest thing on the earth, and they think when money comes it is about all you can ask for, and it seems to be the god of this world. God has said Himself, that “the love of money is the … Read More >

COVID-19, The Economy, And Our Future

The world changed in December 2019 when the COVID-19 pandemic spread exponentially in every part of America and around the World. It’s not just a health crisis, but a terrible economic crisis. At no other time in history has a modern, industrialized economy essentially shut down in a matter of weeks. I am convinced that the economic ripples will continue long after the health scare has passed. With thousands of businesses closed, leaving millions unemployed, it will take time—perhaps years—to rebuild. The economy is not a light switch that can be shut off and turned back on. I believe there … Read More >

The Christian And His Money

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him” (1 Corinthians 16:2). It is an interesting fact that immediately following the great resurrection chapter in this first epistle to the Corinthians, the Apostle gives instruction to the saints concerning the use of their money. With many this is always a touchy question, and yet he who sings from the heart, “Naught that I have my own I’ll call: I hold it for the Giver: My heart, my strength, my life, my allAre His and His forever,”  … Read More >

Tithing

The Old Testament institutes tithing as an obligatory act of worship by God’s people. Israelite tithes supported the landless tribe of Levi and the priesthood of God (Numbers 18:25-32, Nehemiah 10:38). They also served the giver’s family and the nation’s disadvantaged (Deuteronomy 14:22-29).  This command of God was often abused or ignored (Malachi 3:8-10). As in the case with all visible acts of worship, self-righteousness cropped up among the Israelites who actually did tithe (Luke 18:12). Through the fulfilling work of the Messiah, New Testament believers are no longer obligated to perform the particulars of the Law. Tithing is never … Read More >

What God Wants Us To Learn From This Recession

What God is Teaching Us During this Recession God is purposeful. He has reasons for allowing this recession to come to America. No doubt He has many purposes, but surely one of His primary goals is the spiritual growth of His people. If we miss what He wants to teach us, we will only become cynical and begin to doubt His love and care. The first lesson is the most obvious: He wants us to learn that He is with us not just during prosperity but also in times of adversity. When there was famine in the land and Isaac … Read More >

A Lesson On Stewardship

As we look at the subject of Stewardship we must recognize that the importance of this goes far deeper than a question of finance, for when we understand the root principle of stewardship, there is no problem concerning the right use of money. To learn these things from our Lord we turn to a very unusual story which He Himself told. To read this story superficially it might appear that the Saviour is condoning fraud and dishonesty, but that could never be. We need to look at it prayerfully and carefully, and be so alert to the teaching of the … Read More >

Christian Stewardship

No Christian can afford to have the reputation for owing without paying. If through reverses or misfortunes of any kind you find that you are unable to pay a debt, seek your creditor and explain to him, while you appeal to his mercy. If he demands in payment all you have, to the hat that is on your head, you had better surrender it rather than risk making a name for refusing to pay debts. A professing Christian who refused to pay his debts when pressed by his creditors quoted the hymn, “Free from the law, O happy condition,” and … Read More >

Tithing

A sermon from guest speaker Oscar Lowry.  “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse, for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”—Malachi 3:8–10 My theme for … Read More >

Cost Of Living

…All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee…O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own”—1 Chronicles 29:14-16 Money can be a great asset or liability. The Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil,” and we might add, the proper use of money is the root of great good. Some men, like Abraham and Job, are rich and honest; others are rich because they are dishonest. Some are poor because … Read More >

How Do We Trust God In A Collapsing Economy?

Can You Trust God in a Collapsing Economy? As I write this article the news media is flooded with stories about the possibility—or reality—of a recession. The rising price of energy has combined with the sub-prime loan crisis to create a domino effect that is reverberating through all the branches of the economy. Like pulling a thread from a sock, when one part of the economy unravels, all other parts suffer, too. Like it or not, we are all affected. You either are going through your own economic slump or you know someone who is. So, how do you trust … Read More >
