For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
D.L. MOODY
The reason why so many Christians fail all through life is just this—they underestimate the strength of the enemy. We have a terrible enemy to contend with. Don’t let Satan deceive us. Unless we are spiritually dead, it means warfare. Nearly everything around tends to draw us away from God. We do not step clear out of Egypt on to the throne of God. There is the wilderness journey, and there are enemies in the land.
ERWIN LUTZER
Millions of Americans are coming to the conclusion that there is a spiritual realm to the universe. The problem is that many of them simply assume the spiritual realm is always a friendly place, and that if you open up your life and connect with this spiritual realm, it will always do you good. The spiritual realm, however, is seldom friendly—it is filled with evil spirits.
Keep in mind: Just because this spiritual world is unseen doesn’t mean it’s unreal. Demons and angels exist. Let’s not think that only that which we see has reality. As Christians, we must confess that we are in an invisible war. But remember, we’re standing on territory conquered by Christ. We read, “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (Colossians 2:15). Satan’s sentence in the eternal flames has already been pronounced even though he is allowed out on bail. In the words of Martin Luther:
For lo, his doom is sure:
One little word shall fell him.
That word is CHRIST.
PRAYER
Father, you have won the war through your Son.
Help me to take full advantage of His victory and apply it to my life.REFLECTION QUESTIONS
The danger of the spiritual realm is to drift into one of two extremes. Either the Devil is behind every bush, or he does not exist. Which side do you tend to lean on? What is an appropriate stance to take? What does it mean to stand in Christ even as we do battle with the enemy?
