My speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. 1 Corinthians 2:4
D.L. MOODY
What the church of God needs today is the old power that the apostles had: if we have that in our churches, there will be new life. Then we will have new ministers—the same old ministers renewed with power, filled with the Spirit.
I remember when, in Chicago, many were toiling in the work and it seemed as though the car of salvation didn’t move on, a minister began to cry out from the very depths of his heart, “Oh, God, put new ministers in every pulpit.” The next Monday, I heard two or three men say, “We had a new minister last Sunday—the same old minister, but he had got new power.” I firmly believe that is what we want today all over the land. We want new ministers in the pulpit and new people in the pews. We want people quickened by the Spirit of God.
ERWIN LUTZER
Believers need a “quickening,” a constant filling of the Spirit every day. We need Christians whose hearts match their lifestyle. Jesus told the Sardian church, “Wake up” (Rev. 3:1–3). Though outwardly appearing alive, God said, “You are spiritually dead.” They had prosperity and health, but they lacked spiritual vitality. Physically active; spiritually dead.
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and in effect said, “You sing the right songs, you hear the right words, you honor me with your lips, but your heart is far from me” (see Matthew 15:1–9). That can apply to anyone of us. If it does, we are quenching the Holy Spirit. We can grieve the blessed Holy Spirit through our indifference, hypocrisy, and failure to deal with known sin (see Ephesians 4:25–30). My plea to all of us is to be renewed through repentance and submission to receive what Moody called “the quickening of the Spirit of God.”

Father, may I wake up to the reality of my condition and repent of my sin.REFLECTION QUESTIONS
