But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:9
D.L. MOODY
A man once said to me “How do you know that God put that question to Adam?”
The best answer I can give is: Because He has put it to me many a time. I doubt whether there ever has been a son or a daughter of Adam who has not heard that voice ringing through the soul many a time. Who am I? What am I? Where am I going? So, let us put the question to ourselves, personally, Where am I? Not in the sight of man—that is of very little account, but where am I in the sight of God?

So, “Where are you?” On a scale of 1 to 10, where are you spiritually? In your work habits, your relationships with friends, family, and coworkers, “Where are you?” Can you honestly identify where you stand? Of course, God knew exactly where Adam was, but He wanted Adam to tell him. And God knows where we are, but He also wants us to evaluate ourselves.
As for our spiritual identity, we can reply we are “in Christ.” We are born in Adam, but through the new birth, we are now “in Christ” (see 1 Corinthians 15:45). We belong to a different owner, a different relationship, and have a different future. But our identity in Christ has to be lived out in practical experience.
Take time out today and answer the question, “Where are you?” And then, “Where would you like to be?” And, “How will you get there?” As we soon enter a new year, let us take inventory.
PRAYER
Father, thank you that I am yours.
Help me to be all that I am called to be.REFLECTION QUESTIONS
If God already knows exactly where you are spiritually, why is it so vital for your own soul that you honestly identify and confess your current standing to Him?
What are the practical 'work habits' or 'relationships' in your life right now that serve as the most accurate barometer of your actual spiritual health?
