When I was a teenager and found it difficult to fall asleep in the evenings, my parents gave me permission to read books or listen to Christian Radio until I got tired. Because I'm an auditory learner, the radio became my nightly companion. One of the programs I listened to regularly was Grace to You with John MacArthur. I found his expository sermons deeply insightful and full of rich theology.
Last Sunday, July 13, the elders of Grace Community Church announced that John MacArthur had contracted pneumonia and was very likely in his final earthly days. Just after 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 14, he had gone home to be with his Lord and Savior. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” I know the Lord is welcoming him home with a “well done, good and faithful servant!”
I know John MacArthur wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. He embroiled himself in controversies on occasion, some of which were unnecessary and unhelpful. But his legacy of faithful ministry, leadership integrity, and expositional preaching will be the hallmarks of my memory of him. I learned a great deal at his feet, and honor him for a life well-lived. Hebrews 13:7 reminds us, “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.”
Our lives are short. Eternity is what lasts. Live today in light of the glories that await. For then we shall know that we’ve always been loved, more than we ever knew!
