Unfazed Faith

[Abraham] grew strong in his faith. Romans 4:20

D.L. MOODY
Real true faith is man’s weakness leaning on God’s strength. It is the Shepherd’s business to keep the sheep. Whoever heard of the sheep keeping the shepherd? People have an idea that they have to keep themselves and Christ too. It is a false idea. It is the work of the Shepherd to look after them and take care of those who trust Him. An Irishman said, on one occasion, that he often trembled, but his Rock never did.

ERWIN LUTZER
How do we keep believing in God when He doesn’t do what we think He should?
Abraham is a good example of somebody who died in faith. He not only trusted God to fulfill the promise of an heir but also the land promises. One day, God said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess” (Genesis 15:7). Yet when Sarah, his wife, died, what did Abraham have to do? Of all things, he had to purchase a burial plot for her in the very land God promised him. He died in faith, not having seen everything that was promised (Hebrews 11:8–10).
Many of the heroes of faith listed in Hebrews 11, did not see any miracles, but they kept believing God’s promises despite contrary evidence. This explains why they were honored in the catalog of the heroes of faith. What they said was, “Life is hard, but I’m not going to blame God and I’m not going to conclude He doesn’t love me just because things don’t turn out my way.”
From my heart to yours: Keep on believing. Don’t abandon your faith; our Father tests us so that He might bless us. Let us resolve that we will die in faith, not having seen everything that has been promised us.

PRAYER
Father, my faith is weak; invigorate me. Help me to continue in faith rooted in your promises, rooted in Christ.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
If our Father tests us in order to bless us, how has a past season of painful testing ultimately deepened your reliance on Christ?

If God chooses not to answer your deepest prayer before you draw your last breath, can you say from the heart, "Jesus is enough, and I will die trusting Him"?
