The Curse of Idolatry

For their rock is not as our Rock; our enemies are by themselves. Deuteronomy 32:31

D.L. MOODY
Has the human heart ever been satisfied with false gods? Can pleasure or riches fill the soul that is empty of God? How about the atheist, the deist, the pantheist? What do they look forward to? Nothing! Man’s life is full of trouble; but when the billows of affliction and disappointment are rising and rolling over them, they have no God to call upon. They shall “cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble” (Jeremiah 11:12). Therefore, I contend “their rock is not as our Rock.”

ERWIN LUTZER
Idols not only can’t save us, they distract us from knowing the true and living God. Jesus told this story in Luke 12:16–21: “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’”
Then Jesus adds, “So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
This man’s idol was riches. But false gods always disappoint their worshipers. This man discovered that his riches could not give him what he needed most: the forgiveness of God. The world feeds the monster of materialism and possessions but, in the end, like all idols, they will prove inadequate. Christ is the only treasure worth having and the only Master worth following.

PRAYER
Father, show me my hidden idols so I can destroy them in your name.
