Pleading for Jesus

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. Psalm 51:15

D.L. MOODY
It is a very sad thing that so many of God’s children are dumb, yet it is true. The churches are full of them. They can talk about politics, art, and science; they can speak well enough and fast enough about the fashions of the day, but they have no voice for the Son of God.
Dear friend, if Christ is your Saviour, confess Him. Every follower of Jesus should bear testimony for Him. How many opportunities each one has in society and in business to speak a word for Him! How many opportunities occur daily wherein every Christian might be “instant in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2) in pleading for Jesus! In so doing, we receive blessing for ourselves and also become a means of blessing to others.

ERWIN LUTZER
The famous atheist, Bertrand Russell, was asked, “What if…when the time comes, you should meet Him? What will you say?” He said, “God, you gave us insufficient evidence.” Russell was wrong. The Bible teaches that God is not hiding Himself from humanity. We are hiding ourselves from God. Every person is created in God’s image and intuitively knows they are sinners and God is holy. In his preaching, Moody appealed to sinners with the confidence that God had already gone ahead of him, preparing hearts to hear the message. Many rejected Moody’s message, but tens of thousands responded.
Moody gives us a challenge: Are we pleading with others to accept Jesus? Your friends and relatives might be more open to the gospel than you realize. There is plenty of evidence for the existence of God and the death and resurrection of Jesus. Let’s not be ashamed of the one message able to save sinners.

PRAYER
Father, help me to share the gospel with others. Like Moody, let me plead for people in prayer, and witness with confidence.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
If the problem is not ‘insufficient evidence’ but that we are ‘hiding from God,’ what are the most common ways people hide behind intellectual excuses?

Who is one friend or relative you have assumed is closed to the Gospel, and how can you test that assumption this week?
