Loved Before Time

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. John 3:14–15

D.L. MOODY
I heard of a woman who thought there was no promise in the Bible for her; she thought the promises were for others, not for her. There are many of these people in the world. They think it is too good to be true that they can be saved for nothing. This woman one day got a letter, and when she opened it, she found it was not for her at all; it was meant for another woman who had the same name; and she had her eyes opened to the fact that if she should find some promise in the Bible directed to her name, she would not know whether it meant her or someone else that bore her name. But you know the word whosoever includes each and every one in the wide world!

ERWIN LUTZER
Yes, the promises of God are for all who will believe them. In fact, God even gives us the ability to believe His promises, for we cannot believe them without His intervention and help. To be clear: all the promises of God are yes in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). And again, we read, “he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”
As you read God’s promises for believers, insert your own name into them; they are intended for you and me. God is always personal. Jesus calls His own sheep by name (John 10:3). Your friends might forget your name; indeed, there are people who struggle with memory loss and your own mother or father might forget your name, but God does not.

PRAYER
Father, thank you for choosing me, and may I claim your promises for myself.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Why is it significant that Jesus calls His sheep by name rather than addressing them as a nameless collective?

In what ways does your identity change when you realize that God’s memory of you is more permanent than the memory of your own family or friends?
