To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, John 1:12
D.L. MOODY
Yes, sons of God! Power to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil; power to crucify every besetting sin, passion, lust; power to shout in triumph over every trouble and temptation of life, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me!” (Philippians 4:13).
ERWIN LUTZER
Power to overcome sin! That is power at its best. Slaves don’t tell their master what to do; they do the master’s bidding. To be a slave of sin means to be overpowered by it, driven by it, controlled by the lusts burning within the soul. Most people think they can control sin, but they can’t. For that, divine power is needed.
Jesus said it clearly, “Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34). Sin gives the orders, you obey. Though this is especially seen in the lives of addicts, it can be true of our lives too; if we do not master sin, sin will master us.
Jesus said of the Pharisees, “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires” (John 8:44). Contrast this with our Heavenly Father who liberates us from sin and gives us the desire and the strength to master what enslaves us.
Moody was not exaggerating when he said we had power in Christ to crucify every besetting sin, passion, lust, and sinful power. This power is found in Christ. In fact, all the necessary legal work for such power has already been accomplished by Christ. In Him, our sinful nature has been crucified, dead and buried.
