Faithful Doubting

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” John 20:24–25

D.L. MOODY
I often think that Thomas was the most unhappy man in Jerusalem during the week that followed. It would have been far more reasonable for him to have believed those who saw Jesus, rather than to have doubted their word. But unbelief is the most unreasonable thing in the world.

ERWIN LUTZER
Many people doubt God’s promises, and some doubt their salvation. As they think about their future, they have a very vague hope that all will be well and say, “I just hope that God will be gracious.” God can handle your doubts. It is okay to doubt because as it has been said, “He who has never really doubted has never really believed,”
Some people should doubt their salvation because they are not saved. Saving faith is the deep settled conviction that what Jesus Christ did on the cross for us is sufficient for us to be welcomed by God. If you have doubts, bring them to Jesus. As the song “Just as I am” reads, “Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come.”

PRAYER
Father, help me to believe that trust in Jesus is enough.

Assurance is growth, what can you do to grow in your assurance that Christ has paid it all for you?

When you doubt, what can you do to focus on what Christ has done?
