Grace and Law

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us— for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.”

Galatians 3:13
D.L. MOODY
Life never came through the law. As someone has observed: “When the law was given, three thousand men lost life; but when grace and truth came at Pentecost, three thousand obtained life.” Under the law, if a man became a drunkard, the magistrates would take him out and stone him to death. When the prodigal came home, grace met him and embraced him. Law said, “Stone him!”—grace said, “Kiss him!” Law went after him and bound him; grace said, “Loose him and let him go!” Law tells me how crooked I am; grace comes and makes me straight.

ERWIN LUTZER
How the law displays God’s holiness and exposes our sinfulness, it also reveals our need for grace. The grace of atonement was made for us when Jesus was crucified and died; He became a curse on our behalf when He was “hung on the tree” (see Deuteronomy 21:22–23). Having taken our punishment, He offers us grace.
We make one of two errors: We don’t believe we need God’s grace because we see ourselves as superior to others; or we conclude we are so bad that we cannot be saved. Both are errors. The best among us are still sinners in need God’s grace, and even the worst among us can be redeemed. God, in His grace, does not simply give us a hand, He gives us a resurrection.
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt, Yonder on Calvary’s mount out-poured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt. Grace met the demands of the law in Christ Himself.

PRAYER
Father, thank you for Jesus who bore the curse of the law and saved me by grace alone.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
If the Law cannot bring life, what is its essential, ongoing role in a believer's life? How does it "reveal our need for grace"?
What is your response to God, knowing that you are saved by grace apart from anything you did?
