God's Garden

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
Romans 11:33
D.L. MOODY
I thank God there is a height in the Bible I do not know anything about, a depth I have never been able to fathom, and it makes the Book all the more fascinating. If I could take that Book up and read it as I can any other book and understand it as one reading, I should have lost faith in it years ago. It is one of the strongest proofs that it must have come from God, that the sharpest men who have dug for fifty years have laid down their pens and said, “There is a depth we know nothing of.” “No Scripture,” said Spurgeon, “is exhausted by a single explanation. The flowers of God’s garden bloom not only double, but sevenfold; they are continually pouring forth fresh fragrance.”

ERWIN LUTZER
How do we experience God’s transforming power? How do we get changed from the inside out? We must meditate on God’s Word. The attention that you pay to God can be directly measured by the attention that you pay to His Book.

Let’s take Charles Spurgeon’s imagery and think of the Bible as a garden. It is meant to be a source of beauty, a place of refuge and a place of hope amid the weeds that are all around us. When I was in my teens, I heard a sermon by Franklin Logsdon, a previous pastor of The Moody Church, who began each message with this short poem.

Think of it carefully, study it prayerfully
Deep in thine heart let its oracles well
Ponder its mystery, slight not its history,
None e’re can love it too fondly or well.

Let us begin each day meditating in the Garden of God.

PRAYER
Lord, I will not put your Word down until you have given me a thought, an idea, an assurance, a promise for today.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
How have you experienced the changing power of God through His Word?
What are some realistic goals you can make to read more of the Bible each day?
