Christians Die Differently

Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. John 8:51

D.L. MOODY
Someday you will read in the papers that D.L. Moody of East Northfield is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now. I shall have gone up higher, that is all; gone out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal, a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint, a body like unto His own glorious body. I was born of the flesh in 1837. I was born of the Spirit in 1856. That which is born of the flesh may die. That which is born of the Spirit will live forever.

ERWIN LUTZER
What a confident affirmation from Moody, a man who, in his youth, feared death! Christians should approach death—and die—differently. There is a verse we cannot repeat too often. Speaking of Jesus, we read that He came as God in the flesh so that “through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery” (Hebrews 2:14–15). Even hardened atheists fear death; but for the Christian, it is the doorway to glory. Jesus said there are two resurrections: a resurrection to life and a resurrection to damnation (John 5:29).
Imagine that—a resurrection to damnation! But for those whose security is in Christ, death is eradicated. Its sting and power are gone (see 1 Corinthians 15:54–55). The day is coming when death will only be a memory. No matter how many victories death wins, those victories are only temporary.
Let’s approach death with confidence in the promises of Christ.

PRAYER
Father, I thank you that death is the pathway.
It is the chariot you send to bring your children home to glory.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
How is a Christian funeral different from any other funerial? Why are we able to mourn unlike the world, and how do you mourn other believers when they pass?

How should our understanding of death affect how we currently live?
