How To Make The Right Decisions

Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe | August 18, 1974

Selected highlights from this sermon

The older we get the more decisions we have to make and the more consequences those decisions will have. But believers can find peace in the fact that God has a will and plan for our lives. Pastor Wiersbe walks us through ways for determining the will of God—and mistakes we often make in the process.

Transcripts for Dr. Wiersbe's sermons are forthcoming. Below is an outline of his message.

The older we get the more decisions we have to make and the more consequences those decisions will have.

Wrong decisions ultimately lead to a wrong life.

Learning about the will of God:

  • Mistakes about the will of God:
    • People think God’s will is dangerous.
      • The real danger is to be outside of the will of God.
      • The will of God is an expression of the love of God.
    • People think God’s will is distant.
      • God’s will is for the present, not just the future.
    • People think God’s will is divided.
      • A loving, holy God could never ordain something less than His best for us.
      • God has one, perfect will for our lives.
    • People think God’s will is difficult to discover.
      • God’s will is revealed to us in the Bible.
      • Sometimes, God calls us to wait.
      • The problem is not God revealing His will to us, the problem is our willingness to obey.
    • The means for determining God’s will:
      • The first step in learning the will of God is giving our bodies to Him.
        • The will of God is not something we do; it’s something we are.
        • Our bodies are tools to be used by God.
      • The second step in learning the will of God is renewing our minds.
        • If we aren’t careful, we will start thinking the way the world thinks.
        • A renewed mind looks at Earth from heaven’s point of view.
        • The Word of God purifies our minds.
        • When a person is filled with Scripture, they are joyful, thankful, and submissive.
      • The third step in learning the will of God is letting Him rule in our hearts.
        • God gives us peace in our hearts when we make the right decisions.
        • The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to bring peace into our hearts.

We learn the will of God by actively following His leading.

Believers do the will of God because of everything He has done for us.

Love motivates us to obey God.
